A Mumbai doctor claimed to find a human finger in his ice cream, leading to the suspension of the manufacturing unit's license.

A 26-year-old doctor from Malad West, Brendan Ferraro, lodged a complaint after allegedly discovering a severed human finger in the ice cream he had ordered online. Following the complaint, a case was registered under sections 272 (adulteration of food or drink intended for sale), 273 (sale of noxious food or drink), and 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC against Yummo Ice Creams.

The implicated ice cream was produced by Fortune Dairy Industries Pvt Ltd at Indapur, a third-party manufacturer for Yummo Ice Creams. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) suspended the manufacturing license of Fortune Dairy Industries following an inspection.


Inspection and Response:

- The FSSAI and FDA officials inspected the manufacturing units in Indapur and Hadapsar.

- Suresh Annapure, Joint Commissioner of FDA, Pune, confirmed the suspension of Fortune Dairy's license.

- The Hadapsar unit was also inspected as a precaution, although it had no direct involvement in the incident.


Statements from Stakeholders:

- Sachin Jadhav, owner of Fortune Dairy, claimed the incident was a conspiracy against their brand, stating that the company cannot conduct manufacturing activities until the suspension is lifted.

- Jadhav mentioned that Fortune Dairy, established in 2020, collects over two lakh litres of milk daily and produces butter and skimmed milk powder.

- Walko QSR Company Pvt Ltd, the owner of Yummo Ice Creams, began outsourcing ice cream manufacturing to Fortune Dairy from September 19, 2023.


The investigation is ongoing, and both the company and the manufacturer are cooperating with authorities.
