In a detailed address to the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis offered insights into Maharashtra’s thriving industrial sector. He began by drawing comparisons between Surat Diamond Bourse and Mumbai’s Bharat Diamond Bourse, emphasizing their respective roles in manufacturing and exporting.
Fadnavis underscored Mumbai's pivotal position in the diamond industry, noting that the city alone is responsible for 75% of India’s $38 billion gem and jewellery exports, with an impressive 97% of polished diamond exports originating from Mumbai. He made it clear that no industries had relocated from Mumbai to Surat, reinforcing Mumbai's significant contribution to the sector.
Shifting focus to the state’s economy, Fadnavis proudly announced that Maharashtra is on the cusp of becoming a half-trillion-dollar economy. He highlighted an impressive economic growth of approximately Rs 6 lakh crore over the past year. Maharashtra has not only maintained its lead in attracting investments from 2014-19 but has also reclaimed the top spot in foreign investments over the past two years.
Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis on Employment Opportunities
The Deputy CM also provided an update on employment initiatives, revealing that the government has pledged to recruit 75,000 candidates. He reported that over 57,000 individuals have already been appointed, with an additional 19,000 set to receive their orders within a month. He lauded the recruitment process for its integrity, noting that approximately 70 lakh candidates took part in the exams without any incidents of paper leaks.
Addressing concerns about prepaid smart meters, Fadnavis clarified that these devices would only be installed in government and Mahavitaran establishments, not in consumers' homes. Contracts for the installation and maintenance of these meters for 10 years have been awarded to five companies, ensuring that consumers will not face any additional financial burden.
