After a remarkable 17-year production run, Nissan has announced that it will stop manufacturing the R35 GT-R sports car in October 2024. The GT-R, affectionately known as Godzilla, was still available in North America until now, having been discontinued in India and Europe in 2022. To mark the end of this legendary vehicle, Nissan USA is releasing two special edition models – the Skyline Edition and the Takumi Edition – which were unveiled earlier this year.

Nissan GT-R: A Legacy of Performance

The current-generation GT-R, which debuted in 2007, took over from the R34 Skyline GT-R. Over the years, Nissan has kept the GT-R competitive with two major facelifts, several special editions, and numerous performance upgrades, ensuring it remained a formidable opponent against newer rivals and evolving regulations worldwide.

The GT-R earned a special place in the tuning community, with some modified versions producing over 1000hp. Even in its stock form, the GT-R was a powerhouse, featuring a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 engine that delivered 570hp. This engine was paired with a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system, making it a versatile and powerful sports car.

Farewell Editions: Skyline and Takumi

The final special editions of the GT-R celebrate its legacy in unique ways. The Skyline Edition features an exclusive Bayside Blue exterior and blue interiors. The T-spec Takumi Edition honors the skilled craftspeople who hand-assembled each GT-R engine, with a Midnight Purple exterior and Mori Green interior. This edition also includes a gold VIN plate with red-etched writing in the engine bay, recognizing the takumi artisans. Both models come equipped with carbon-ceramic brakes, gold RAYS forged wheels, and wider front fenders.

Looking Ahead: The Future of GT-R

There is no immediate replacement planned for the GT-R. However, Nissan hinted at the future with the Hyper Force electric concept, unveiled in October 2023, which previews a potential all-electric successor. This new model is expected to arrive by the end of the decade, promising to continue the GT-R’s legacy in a new era of automotive technology.

The GT-R was sold in India from 2016 to 2022 and will always be remembered as an everyday sports car that delivered extraordinary performance.
